What are your thoughts on non-diamond engagement/wedding rings?

Given the problems with diamonds (unethical sourcing, inhumane conditions in diamond mining, human abuse, etc.), I really don’t like the idea of a diamond ring. It just seems unethical to me (no offense if you have one, this is just my personal view.)

What are other options? My concern is that since our culture is so used to associating diamonds with weddings/engagements, that most people would not even recognize a non-diamond ring for what it was (engagement, wedding, etc.)

Heck - I like emeralds better anyway - I love green!

Anybody else feel this way? What would your solutions be?

I have come accross the following website
www.londonantwerpdiamonds.com - who are diamond brokers in Canary wharf and office in Antwerp. They say the prices are the same to buy a diamond in Canary wharf as to go to antwerp to buy the diamond.
Can anyone advise?
Also is hatton garden the best place to get diamond engagement rings?
And has anyone any experience with Diamond workshop in Hatton Garden.
Any diamond I get I will be getting a certificate.

Help?! Tiffany Setting Diamond Engagement ring?! Yes?! No?

Ok, so my boyfriend bought me a .39 diamond engagement ring in a platinum Tiffany setting. Picture here:

http://www.tiffany.com/Engagement/Item.aspx?subCategoryid=1001

I always wanted a 1 karot emerand cut diamond ring with diamonds on the side, but right now neither of us have much money. My boyfriend got the Tiffany ring for $1,500, which is a great deal since it’s currently worth $2,650 at the Tiffany store. I am still waiting for the ring to arrive & am unsure if I will like it since the setting looks fairly plain. My fiance says that I can return the ring and choose a different one if I want, but that means more money spent on a non-discounted ring. I want the ring to look nice without breaking his bank account, but I just don’t know if the TIffany setting ring will cut it. Honestly, has anyone ever purchased this ring before & are you happy with it? Also, do you think that my diamond size is too small? Should we save up for a larger one later? Or go for the discount?

Why should women get a diamond engagement ring?

I think it should be about love and less emphasis on a diamond. I think we should just start duct tapping gravel to our women’s fingers. Its a win-win situation: cheaper for guys AND women get a bigger rock like they want. My girfriend seems to disagree with me though. Also, as men why do we have to spend like $8,000 on a ring AND lose our freedom??? I think the woman should have to buy us a new car or something. I’m trying to get support for my arguement, so any input would be appreciated.
Gravel is forever too, you know. How does my love change if I give her a big hunk of gravel vs a 2 karat diamond?
Also, I’m still in school and apparently youre suppose to spend “3 months salary.” Right now my annual income is like $7,000/yr, but once I have my grad degree soon I’ll probably start out around 70-100k. So if I buy it really fast now, I go by my current salary and only have to spend about 2 grand right? She think’s its suppose to be my future salary. I think that’s bull@#$t.
i like boat bum’s idea… those poor, poor miners…. but ill let the voters decide

I have a three stone diamond engagement ring that I no longer need, where and how can I sell it? I have an appraisal signed by a professional company, so I already know the worth.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
