A diamond engagement ring is like a guy marking his territory. Supposedly other guys won’t hit on the girl because they can see she’s taken. Kinda like a dog peeing on a hydrant.

It’s an outward sign that you value her. It’s also a way to show that you can afford to support her (I know, outdated as most of us women work too!) Historically, it’s also a sign she’s taken, and no longer has HER freedom. One guy I dated did think an exchange of cars was an appropriate token… It wasn’t a romantic thought.

It doesnt necessarily have to be a diamond unless you can afford it and you want to pamper her of your love. Just go for the things you can afford. If she really loves you then she will understand. diamond is very precious and rare. it has its superb qualities that when given to a lady for her engagement, that means she is being truly valued by her man. it’s not just the cost of the gift being considered here but the symbol that this mineral represents once given to the one he is going to honor and cherish for life…

I used to think the bigger the rock the better the ring. My first engagement ring came in a set that cost $350.00. I didn’t care how much it cost it was the thought and what it meant. My second (by my husband) was 1/4 carat and beautiful and yes more expensive. I loved it just as I did the first one. He surprised me with a new one last year for our anniversary. The stone much bigger than the second one and it came from his grandmothers engagement ring that he had reset in a wide gold band with platinum prongs. It is the most beautiful thing in the world. I would say do what you can afford and if later in life you can afford something better then get it for her then. If she wants a HUGE rock and doesn’t care what kind of financial strain it will put you in, think twice. She won’t change after the wedding.

I could go for that. Give me a ring made out of duct tape and gravel and I will give you a car made out of the same thing. However much you spend on a ring for me I will spend on a car for you. Getting the keys to that car is an entirely different thing.

I sense a lot of sarcasm and some of it sounds demeaning to the women. Putting that aside, a most treasured family heirloom was a ring that my grandfather made. He had no money and wished with all his heart that he could afford a diamond ring for his fiancee…….the ones like her friends had. However, he had all he could do to help support his mother and brothers. He worked very hard at perfecting a ring for her. He melted it out of nickel. Whenever he got spare change, he would practice…..so that the ring would be as beautiful as he could make it. He would stay up late at night, after working long hours, on his ring that was symbolic of the love he had for my grandmother. Total cost of ring: 15 cents Total cost of thought and sentiment: priceless.

However, if my fiancee gave me a ring made of duct tape and gravel with no thought involved. Our love would be on the rocks…………let him sleep with the duct tape!
