I don’t know how it got started, but that’s tradition for you! I guess it shows that if a guy spends a lot of money on a girl, he really likes her and will do anything for her.

diamonds are forever! haha, i guess they are just more valued. i mean, think about it. they are basically dinosaurs that have been dead for billions of years, that pretty valuable.

For may reasons: a diamond not only signifies an engagement but you can get a birthstone anytime like your BIRTHDAY but diamonds are forever and definitely are a girls BEST friend. At least as far as I’m concerned. Take Care!!

Well, many people think diamonds are a girls best friend, i hear that alot. And considering the diamond is the most valuable stone, it can stand as a symbol, the diamond can actually not be broken.

Diamonds are a girls best friend right?

I think that in the early 1800’s a woman was given the diamond as a security to her to sale should her provider die. This is why the biggest diamond affordable at the time of marriage was appropriate.

Some ladies have been married with 4 carat diamond rings and that is a nice little hefty payment.

In todays market of marriage people do not symbolize this as much because insurance was born and now by having insurance your wife can be taken care of after your death, but in the 1800’s insurance was not founded yet.

It’s some tradition that started years ago (I think it was a queen of england but I could be totally wrong there). Personally my birthstone is a diamond so I didn’t want a diamond for an engagement ring.. it wasn’t “special”

It’s tradition, a symbol of union and a wedding promise. It has nothing to do with money, you can have an engagement ring with a small diamond, it’s still an engagement ring announcing a marriage.

If a couple don’t want to marry, then they don’t have to engage, and a promise ring is appropriate.

Diamond is the stone of choice because of its value, it’s also the stronger material on earth. But this is not something like “if it’s a really expensive diamond, then it means he really loves me”. The biggest diamonds are not the most perfect ones.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
