Where should I look for ruby engagement rings in New York?

diamond engagement rings
Kickass Monster asked:

My girlfriend isn’t interested in a diamond engagement ring. Which is great, except that I’m completely clueless as to what to even look for in a non-diamond engagement ring. I have a decent sense of what she likes, but can just any nice ring be an engagement ring? And can anyone recommend a good jeweler for this sort of thing?

Tiffany’s. You don’t have to buy it there, but you can get some ideas and some recommendations and then look around for something similar. Good luck!

Are you kidding? New York City has one of the greatest Diamond Districts in the world! Other than that you can try consignment stores or antique shops. Often you can find something truly lovely for a really decent price, and if it’s older it usually has better rubies.

Any reputable jewelry store is okay. But be careful. Gemstones are sometimes artificially created. As a woman I would want the real thing. You can tell because the artificial ones are very clear and almost look like colored glass. talk to your jeweler about the difference.

babydoll is right, it starts with a “T” and puts their product in a pretty blue box.
And whoever said the diamond district is right, too. Beautiful stones for less money, no mark-up for a blue box and a fancy/famous name.
Look around for jewelers who can pick you a quality stone, and design a setting for it. Even my jewler here in podunk, mid -America has a catalogue of settings, you can buy or use a stone you already have. My Mom took her original diamond engagement stone, and had it reset for me.
I was recently at a mall jeweler, and they had some pretty ruby rings. The stones were not that great, but they were set nicely.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
