Engagement rings! Help with buying a diamond?
Thursday, June 19th, 2008 | Fashion & Accessories
So, as with life, if you want something perfect you gotta be ready to pay an arm and a leg for it.
I am looking to buy my fiance a diamond solitaire engagement ring. Unfortunately since I left my job to move across the country I am on a bit of a budget.
The ideal ring that I want to buy is a 1.5 carat, VS1 or better, F or better color with an Prem cut. Unfortunately, those run in about the $15-17k range.
So, I need to “adjust” one if the 5 Cs to make it fit my budget of about $10-12k.
What should I sacrifice? Color? Clarity? Carat is out of the question since I want to keep it at 1.5.
So anyone have any opinions?
Fiance wants a dinky ring so for those of you who think she is greedy and stuck up….she is not. This is my choice.

The rule of thumb is…….
2 months salary is what you should pay for an engagement ring.
Don’t go to a store at the mall for a diamond, go to a REAL jeweler.
If you have to sacrifice something, sacrifice color. Clarity is important, but then again, so is color.

well, i’m not the expert of diamond…
but when i read your story… i believe both of you’re wise couple,
i mena if you have a budget limit for the ring then fix the diamond with your budget… remember diamond still a diamond, it’s beautiful but you can’t measure the love with that stone…
she will love everything that you’ll buy for her.
Then, i didnt know too how much your budget but some friends of mine reccomend Neil Lane for that, If still too expensive you can choose other jewel stores nearby…
Good Luck ^ ^

if you drop to a VS2 it’s not going to make a noticeable visual difference to your fiance, unless she is a gemologist with a powerful magnifying glass. and if you move down to a G, the difference again will not be major. a 1.5 ct G/VS2 should run you $12-14k depending on where you buy it. so a G-H or H and VS2 stone will get you into your price range. you can also cut corners by selecting 18k white gold instead of platinum for the mounting. remember you can always upgrade to a platinum setting at a later date, it’s the diamond that matters now. just make sure you get a diamond with a certification. don’t go to crummy mall stores or discount jewelers. the only
oh and by the way, it’s 4 Cs not 5 Cs. cut, color, clarity, carat
Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
