Question about engagement ring diamond?
Monday, December 1st, 2008 | Weddings
I was subtely asking my girlfriend what type of diamonds she likes on engagement rings and she said either round or emerald cut. I wish she had just said one or the other.
Between the two, which do you like better or looks nicer? Round or Emerald cut?

I personally cant stand round on a ring, but I am not thrilled about emerald either…If I had to pick it would be emerald

I love emerald - it is SO unique and rare. That’s the one I would pick if I were you.
Round is really simple, and will probably be easier for you to find more choices of round cuts.

round is more classic and sparkles more then emerald cut

Go check a few out and see what grabs your eye. It is your gift to her she loves you she will except a triangle. Good luck on everything

I like round better. Congrats to you!

As a female, I would say emerald. I personally like the Princess cut. I think round ones look cheap.

I prefer round for a diamond. Emerald is good, but only for a colored gem. Round also opens up your choices for the setting itself.

I thought I wanted a square or emerald cut until I tried one on. If your girlfriend is short, or with short fingers, the square shapes just don’t work, just makes your hands look shorter. If she’s long fingered and blessedly tall, then either would work. Though when I held up an emerald and a round together, the round is just more eye catching, super sparkley~!

Emerald are becoming more popular but you can’t go wrong with round, which is more classic.

I’m a princess cut lady myself but here’s what round and emerald cut diamonds say about the wearer:
Round – The most popular, faithful, traditional and religious. Most round wearers chose a round for its clean lines and symmetry. The idea that a circle has no beginning and no end adds to the romance of a round. Round wearers tend to be old fashioned, honest with values and beliefs they would fight for. The only down side to some that choose a round is their lack of spontaneity and leadership abilities. Round wearers tend to be more team players than team leaders.
Emerald Cut – Emerald Cut wearers are old fashioned like round wearers but being in the crowd, following the crowd is not the drum beat that they follow. In fact, the interesting thing about Emerald Cut wearers is their lack of rationale to do anything to impress others. Not that other people’s opinions don’t count, it’s just that they don’t see themselves through the eyes of others. Emerald Cut wearers are leaders. They are attracted to an Emerald Cut for its quiet elegance, its regal temperament and bold strokes. The Emerald Cut wearer doesn’t need pop to sell her diamond, that’s what she is there for.

Emerald cut is much nicer, classier and also more expensive in most cases. Round is the most common type of cut that I’ve ever seen in jewelry stores, so there’s more chance that you would pick a ring that many other women have. Emerald is not as common. Here’s an example of an emerald cut engagement ring.

I will have to say emerald. I am not much into round diamonds; princess is my favorite. I do have an emerald cut aquamarine ring and I love it. I agree with one of the previous posters - round is a little bit older. I think the quadrangle cut gems are more modern.

round would be cute, but thats only if it only had one diamond. what about if you do round as the main stone, then two emerald stones on the side, or vice versa. it sounds weird i know, but look into it. There might be some really cute rings! Congrats by the way. Good luck with everything.

Round for sure. It’s classic and will never go out of style. Although you should really try to pick whatever fits your future fiance best. I asked my wifes mom for advice as she knew my fiance’s style better then anyone.

A well-cut round brilliant will sparkle a lot more than any other shape because it has been mathematically engineered to reflect almost all of the light that enters it. They will also display more “fire” (diffracted colors) because of all the carefully-positioned facets and angles.
Go to a nice fine jewelry store (NOT one of the chain places, like Helzberg’s or Kay’s) and have them explain the cut grading to you and show you some diamonds of different grades (the “4 C’s”) and shapes (round brilliant, marquis, square, pear, emerald, etc.).
Your jeweler will take you to a grading room with special simulated daylight lighting under 5000 Kelvin lights. This is key, because most jewelry stores have a different kind of lighting in their storefronts which is designed specifically to make even poor-quality gems shine like crazy. If your jeweler can’t show you the diamond unmounted, without the ring, leave and find a quality jeweler.
They will show you several diamonds that aren’t mounted in rings. It’s important to look at the diamonds this way because you can look at them from different angles, without the ring interfering or adding color. They will also let you look at the diamonds with a jeweler’s loupe or a gemoscope (basically a microscope) under 10x magnification, which is what the gemologists use when grading diamonds.
You should specifically focus on looking at round brilliants, as well as emerald cuts, so that you will know the difference. Once you’ve seen the diamonds for yourself, you can make an informed decision.

I personally prefer round, but that’s because I have long, slender fingers and I feel that emerald-cut diamonds sort of elongate them even further. If I were you I’d go for a round brilliant cut. Classic and beautiful, just like your GF. Luck!

Personally, I like the princess cut…but out of those two, I would go with an emerald cut. Though the round cut is more popular–it is more versatile and more commonly seen, I like the emerald BECAUSE of the fact that it’s not as popular and it’s just a shape that I prefer.
If you decide to go with an emerald cut, keep in mind that it may not sparkle as much as other cuts because it has less facets to reflect the light. In addition, you MUST go to a reputable jeweler for this because clarity is key since there are fewer facets to reflect light and hide defects so you’ll want a good quality diamond.
You should go and take a look at rings with both shapes to see which one is more preferrable because ultimately this is a personal choice. Choose a cut that reflects your gf and her personality.

Emerald is classy and unique, and is reminiscent of antique rings. Sure to be noticed.
Round IS the best cut for sparkle, which is why it’s the classic cut for engagement rings. In my opinion, however, it is overdone.

i personally would rather have emerald cut, but most girls like round better. round is the traditional cut, go with the round.

i prefere round myself
Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
