What are some alternative opitions to a diamond engagement ring?
Monday, December 1st, 2008 | Weddings
I’m not a fan of diamonds, and my guy is talking about what sort of ring I want, so I would like to know if there is a stone, or if pearls have the longevity that a diamond would have. Thanks!

Pearls are relatively delicate compared to diamonds - they are much higher maintenance and can be scratched pretty easily. I’ve seen rubies or sapphires instead of diamonds, and that’s really pretty.

Though I’m not a jeweler, I believe any precious stone will last as long as any other. And, engagement rings don’t have to be diamond, that’s just tradition not set in stone (pardon the pun) Take a look at some jewelry websites (here’s a good one) and see which stone you prefer. Remember it’s not the type of stone it’s the feeling behind it that matters. Hell, I’d be happy with a cracker jack ring if there was love behind it.
Good luck to you.

My cousin has a beautiful sapphire engagement ring. She picked it out herself and she absolutely loves it. You can use just about any stone for an engagement ring (and it probably won’t run you nearly as much as a diamond, so you can buy as big as you want!) it just won’t be labeled an engagement ring normally.
However, I would caution against using a pearl. Although quite beautiful and everlasting on a rope, they tend to not be quite so steady in a ring setting. Even the more pricey pearl rings are to be worn with caution. My mother had a gorgeous black pearl ring that she received for an anniversary present. She had it for about 4 years and one day the pearl fell out. She had worn it on a regular basis over that time. When she finally found the pearl (by some miracle) the jeweler she took it to, to have it reset told her that this sort of thing happens often with pearl rings. Especially larger pearls. I’m guessing that they can’t quite hold as well in the setting.
Emeralds, rubies, and sapphires all tend to hold their value. Emeralds especially.

Pearls are very soft so they are much easier to damage and I would not think it would be a good choice for a wedding ring. I personally LOVE them and they are probably my favorite, but when choosing a ring that you will be most likely wearing everyday, you may want to consider something a little more durable. I am not sure if you know this but diamonds do come in many colors so if it is just that you want something a little more different then you may want to consider that. If you are set on a pearl wedding ring though then go for it, because you are the one who will be wearing it
I hope this helps a bit.

i personally have always thought a black tahitian pearl solitaire would be incredible… i did a quick search on google and found a cool one
also sapphires make incredible rings… however to distinguish it as an engagement ring and not “just a ring” a solitaire style would be fitting.
there’s always going to be people saying that engagement ring should always be a diamond… and honestly i believe that a little too.
but the truth is that as women we all have our own unique styles that should be reflected in our symbols of commitment. the sky is the limit when it comes to gems and you definitely get more bang for your buck! good luck and congratulations!

If you love your birthstone, do that. Emeralds are of course beautiful. Rubies, sapphire, Tahitian pearls, other colored pearls, opals, many beautiful stones. Read this it explains engagement rings more-.

How about wearing your fiance’s birthstone instead. Any gem would be beautiful.

have you ever thought about a color diamond…they come in lots of colros like pink, blue, green, teal, yellow, etc. i’ve gotten a few off jewelery televisions website…they are very good quality and a lot less $$$ than the white ones…plus they are more unique…check out some of these…
p.s. my fiance got my bridal set from this site…it appraised for almost 3times what he paid for it…and not a day goes by that i don’t get a compliment on it
good luck with everything and congratulations!!!

I had wondered this myself recently. I’m not a real big fan of Diamonds not only because they’re expensive but they’re almost common nowadays if you think about it. So, I’d tried to convince my Hunny to get me an Amethyst or a Moons Stone those being my faves. Well,…
I just came back from the Jewelry store today (rings bought!) and I found out that the next hardest stone generally is a Sapphire. They’re durable and nowhere near as expensive as the traditional diamond. Generally blue they have a tone scheme ranging from pale, near white, to so dark they almost appear black (mine). They’re very fashionable and don’t scratch easily.
Pearls are also a beautiful stone but I’d be worried about the durability as one. Also, with stones like pearl there tends to be issues with prongs (the little bits that keep stones in the ring) and stones falling out or becoming loose. The best person to ask would be your local Jeweler for the best advice on stones, just a little side tip though. Don’t tell them you’re thinking about buying when you’re trying to figure out about the different stones. In fact, tell them you’re not interested in buying until you’ve gotten all the info you need. This way they’re not trying to sell you next expensive thing they carry.
Another side note: Sapphire also means loyalty, destiny, and a variety of other wonderful things that can tie into your relationship.

I would recommend that you select another precious stone that you like. Or if you want the ‘diamond’ look, try white sapphires. I will warn you that white sapphires simply do not sparkle the same way diamonds do. However, they are very hard (hardness of 9 vs. diamonds at 10) and will hold up over time.
Pearls are very delicate and should not be worn on a daily basis.

you could get a ring like Laura Ingalls Wilder had.
Gold band with perals and garnet.

Well i love pearls my self, they are my birthstone, but i would only suggest getting them in a ring if you buy it as a dress ring and only wear them occasionally. They do tend to scratch and fall out of the settings if worn on an everyday use.
I personally love Citrine and white topaz (which happen to be my fiance birthstone), and if i didn’t already have an engagement ring which my lovely fiance picked out for me(and i love the ring i have) i would definitely have a white topaz ring. like this one.

I really like the idea if wearing your future husbands birthstone in an engegment ring, just aslong as its one that you really like. Too bad if his birthday is in October (opal is the birthstone).
Any gem can be used in an engegment ring, its more and more common these days. And i do believe that even though Diamonds are the hardest natural gem, any of the other gemstanes would last a lifetime
FYI: Chandler gave monica a sapphire engement ring in “Friends” which i thought was sweet, considering how Monica was such a bridezilla. I didnt thik she would accept any other ring apart from a diamond. But she loved it. I know i am ra,bling on about a TV show, but like i said…. It personal prefernce what stone you get in your engament ring.

how about your birth stone? its up to you though what type of gem you like. there are different colour diamonds also, pink, yellow, brown etc, but they are more expensive then white diamonds, but something different.

Anything but a pearl would work out fine. The idea that an engagement ring HAS to be a diamond (and should cost 2-3 months salary) was pretty much invented by the diamond industry.

get your birthstone or any ring you love. Go to a jewerlty store and try on different things. See what you like. Just keep in mind if you plan in wearing a wedding band find a ring that will allow another ring with it.

My friend is like you and dislikes diamonds. Her husband bought her a 2 carat emerald cut blue sapphire, set in platinum. You could probably go for a birth stone or a pretty gem stone.
good luck. ![]()
Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
