Help getting better price on a ring?

Monday, March 9th, 2009 | Weddings

Hot Dawger asked:

I noticed that chain stores have way over priced diamonds after going on the chicago diamond exchange website and seeing what diamonds should cost. Do you guys have any tips for a new ring shopper to get the best deal on a diamond engagement ring? I want a high quality 1ct princess cut but everyone seems over priced compared to these costs. But with the diamond exchange your cost comes from customizing the jewelry and the accent stones. Any tips or anything would be helpful do jewelry stores negotiate?

My new wedding ring came from a jeweler that sells on eBay. He has a store front & sells on eBay on the side. I got a 7k ring with high quality diamonds for just over $1,100.00 with free shipping & sizing up 2 sizes. The sizing was not stretching either, he added more gold to the band. The ring is beautiful and well worth what we paid for it. If you do look on eBay for rings, make sure you check the sellers feedback. There are many sellers on eBay, so I am sure you will find a nice selection.

Skip overpriced jewelry stores and buy straight from the manufacturer and save thousands of dollars.

Go to:
?%5Fencoding=UTF8&%255Fencoding=UTF8&sequenceStep=step1&pipelineID=cyor&sequenceID=sequence1

They have a “Build your ring” feature and will allow you to customize your ring based on price, cut etc. Choose from dozens of settings. Amazon deals directly with the New York Diamond Exchange, so you cut the middle man and the stores overhead. No shipping charges and no taxes in most states!!!

Good luck

There’s always a mark up for diamonds in any jewelry store. Any product normally has a 75% mark up whether it’s diamonds or cereal. Probably the best thing to do is to buy the diamond separate at a cheaper price. Find a setting you like from somewhere else, and get it set by a jeweler. It normally doesn’t cost very much to get it set. The settings are normally cheaper as the diamonds in the setting can be of lower grade.
If you’re really looking for a deal and don’t mind used, look on craigslist or ebay. Used jewelry is never even close to the original purchase price. You could always get a diamond that way and get a different setting. The rings are cheaper than the original cost of the center diamond. A diamond is a diamond either way. If you get it cleaned, it can look like a brand new ring!

This is where my husband purchased my ring. The quality is really GREAT and the prices are excellent! They are still my preferred jewelry vendor. I purchased my husbands platinum band from here too and it was a great price. I consider myself a bargain shopper. I want great quality, but I don’t want to pay retail.

Congratulations!

Easy–don’t buy retail. Buy from an individual or a pawn shop. Who cares where it came from, if you can get a better one at a cheaper rate? She’ll never know.

the best way to get the best price is second hand, and although like a car will devalue as it gets older a diamond NEVER looses its vitality no matter how old it is… and you could have it reset!
so you will be getting more bang for your buck because someone else has suffered the devaluation

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
