Does an engagement ring have to be a diamond? or does it depend on ones preference?

my boyfriend were having a discussion about it.. and i’ve always hated diamonds and yellow gold … i would prefer a pink sapphire and white gold rather than the Traditional.. also… i’ve always had it in my mind for a fancy engagement ring then a simple wedding band, is that also okay?
i have the one i want in mind…i want either that one or one similiar.. its got a oval cut pink sapphire and small diamonds around it.. 1.33 carats. very dainty and small band i have small fingers so i cant have something big.. 14k white gold band and set.. i get all dreamy eyed when i see it, its so beautiful

In this day and age, you can have whatever you want.

I want a ceylon sapphire set in 10kt white.

its your ring and your life. If your the one who has to wear it for the rest of your life, it can be whatever you want it to be. An engagement ring and wedding band are symbols, not an exact art..

The ring sounds like it would be pretty! Good Luck!

Mine is actually a one carat natural blue sapphire with a row of alternating small sapphires and tiny diamonds on either side…I absolutely love it because it is more me than a plain diamond would have been. So the point it, the ring should reflect your personality, not societal norms.

diamonds as an engagement ring stone is a recent phenomenon thanx to a really aggressive and clever advertizing campaign by De Beers, who hold the monopoly on gem quality diamonds….it started in the 1930’s and they literally created the demand for diamonds…and now they can ask outrageous prices for a rather common stone based on a created demand…not how rare diamonds are….

I think pink sapphires are beautiful but then I’m with you-I don’t care for diamonds at all, just cold lumps of compressed carbon they are….
and I think a solitaire in a pink sapphire in a simple white gold setting with an eternity band style wedding band containing pink sapphires would be a stunning set, don’t you?

Edit: read your details, Hon the ring sounds beautiful in fact you could still wear a wedding band with it, a very narrow plain white gold polished band would look lovely and not over whelm your delicate hand/fingers…

FYI my engagement ring is a two stone bypass, his brithstone & mine with diamond accents..I wear a plain gold wedding band with it…looks great!

I’m with you. I actually hate diamonds and all the entire industry, and the previous poster was right that the current hubub about having to have a diamond engagement ring is due to nothing but a marketing campaign. Yech. I also think diamonds are boring and unoriginal. So if you want a different kind of ring for your engagement ring, go for it!! You can also do anything you want with the wedding band issue…just an engagement ring for your life, no wedding band, two wedding bands, whatever! Good luck and enjoy.

It is totally preference of the wearer!

I have an aquamarine center stone with little diamonds on the sides and it is in white gold. I’m very very happy with my unique engagement ring!

not necessarily…traditonally a diamond….but it depends on ones preferences and money……I’m not a big diamond girl…I don’t even like huge “rocks” “stones”, etc……I’m more of a gem stone person……white gold band with a blue sapphire, diamond accented and I’m perfectly happy. Plus, the bigger the stone, the more chance you have of it snagging on clothes, or getting caught in machinery, etc….but now adays it’s whatever the bride and groom decide

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
