Enough for a decent engagement ring?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 | Weddings

MishMash asked:

I want to surprise my soon to be fiance with a nice diamond engagement ring. I have saved just about $10,000 for it. Is this enough to buy her a decent sized, high quality ring? How many karats do you think? By the way, is it better to surprise her or let her pick it out herself?
haha…cerbphan, I agree, she knows I love her already. Not trying to prove it, just trying to give her a nice gift. We’ve been thinking about getting hitched for about 5 years now. That’s only $2,000 saved each year so not too much. And my car is pretty fancy too so I figure I owe her something equally as good..haha! ;-) We shall see.

Suprise her! go to robbins brothers, they have a great stock of rings for any budget. Plus she would want a ring you chose out because she is going to be your wife so she should love you and your preference

Frankly, a great quality ring doesn’t show your love for her… $10,000 is totally ridiculous for a shinny rock…
I hope that you’re driving nothing less than a ferrari if you can pay $10,000 for a freaking ring…

Anyway, that’s what I think.

Not to get all mooshy. But if she’s the one and she loves you, the smallest diamond will be enough. I want a small one myself.

yes that is more then enough for a “decent ring’ and it all depends on how your girl is, best of luck

That is PLENTY for a real nice diamond ring. You can always try to get it out of her best friend what kind of ring she likes that way it can be a surprise. Most stores will let you pick out a ring and if she doesn’t like it you can switch it out. No big deal. Shane Co. is a great company and they will guarantee for LIFE for free (no extra fees and etc.)

omg how exciting!!! definetly leave it for a suprise! maybe take her sister, or her friend (if she can keep a secret!) or any female with you to help pick it out but you have to keep it as a suprise! i think 10,000 is a very good amount! it will be very decent sized. im not sure how many karats…but it will be a mighty ring indeed! good luck! im all excited for you now lol

She may not like the kind of rings you get with that kind of cash, a lot of them have really big rocks and are kind of imposing. She may not like a ring that big, and go for something a little less obstructing. Ten grand is a lot to pay for a wedding ring though. But I am saying all this from a working/middle class point of view. I think for me it would be like a months wages, which is the rule of thumb.

Oh and New Zealand is tax free on all jewellery one of the cheapest places to buy it.

That should be plenty depending on where you are getting it. Most decent sized rings cost around $5000

It also depends on her surprise her if she likes surprises. I think it would be more special if it was something you picked out that reminded you of her. It comes from the heart that way.

Alot of Tiffany Rings aren’t even that expensive:

If there is really love it will not matter how big the ring is as long as u give it to here if she really Love’s you.when i married my husband the ring he gave me was like grain of sand but you know what to me it was the world i still have it. It’s been 5 years & things have gotton better and he got me a bigger ring it a 3.5 karats guess what i can hardly wear it don’t want to lose it & always runnning behine the kids at the park so I find it much easer to wear the 1st ring better and were the bigger one when we are going uot.

That’s quite a bit for a ring but not obscene, as long as you are not working some low end job and drowning in debt. Definitly go to a reputable dealer and remember to go with the 4 c’s (they will explain everything ) there’s nothing tackier than a HUGE rock, that is on the low end with flaws and low brilliance

10 grand is abolutely enough to purchase a beautiful ring of high quality and size. You could purchase a 2 carat of high quality…easily! If you know her taste well enough you can suprise her, but if she’s someone who is very particular… it would be best to let her select. If you have a certain jeweler in mind, make arrangements ahead of time with them to arrange a selection within a certain price range, including qualitites, size & such. Then when you & her go in for your appoinment, a group of selection of which for her to choose from is already for her to see. Remember…solitaires & 3 diamond settings are best. Their easier to upgrade at a later date if you choose to, but I can’t see that happening considering the amount you have to play with. Afterwards…invite her & your parents (or friends) out to dinner & then spring it on them…It will be a beautiful…memorable occasion!

Just curious … (not to be nosy), but how well and how long have you known her? Do you make good money … also, how long did it take you to save $10,000? For I think that if you’ve known her long enough & know her well enough (for marriage, sad to say… especially in this day and age, is a “gamble” (especially for the deliriously young and in love)); and if your income is substantial (and can survive a “loss”), then I think $10,000 is more than enough, to buy a “decent sized, high quality ring.” I think it’s important to spend what you can afford to spend (I would hate to think you would wipe out all of your savings on the ring). You can also spend just a few thousand dollars (say 2-5 thousand) and still get a beautiful, good sized, high quality ring (that I know, speaking for myself, “I” would be more than happy with(!) … and you would still have at least half of your savings left, which actually I think would be better spent/saved for a down payment on a house (unless money is “no problem”). I know at times it’s hard to use good judgment … especially when it comes to matters of the heart, but whatever you decide to do, and however, you decide to do it .., I wish you good luck, success, much happiness, and a forever love, of course).

That is more then enough - what a generous guy you are! How lovely.

My husband spent about $8500.00 on my engagement and wedding rings. They are perfect!

you don’t need to spend anywhere near that amount. you can get a 1 carat ring for $1500. if you want to go crazy and get her a 2 carat ring, you can find that for around $3,000. then you can put the rest of the money toward the actual wedding

That’s a nice chunk of change you’ve dedicated saving! Congrats!

I always recommend checking out bluenile.com. They have excellent diamond education information so you can learn what a great quality diamond is, and they also have some of the best prices on diamonds - almost wholesale prices.

You could get her a flawless, really high quality 1-1.5 carat diamond for $10,000, and there are tons of setting options too. Also, there is an exchange guarantee, so if she doesn’t like what you pick you can return it and pick another ring out together.

Good luck!

I am sorry but I would be upset if my fiance spent that much on a ring. I can’t imagine buying a ring that expensive! But yes you do have enough to get a MORE than decent ring! I have a white gold ring with 12 diamonds(not many karates though bcuz i didn’t want a huge ring)all real and I can guarantee it didn’t cost even half of that!

$10,000 should get you something nice. Keep in mind, however, that she might want a wedding band, too, and so you might want to keep some of that for the wedding band.

Depending on the quality of the diamond, you could get a center stone up to about 1.5 carats, depending on color and clarity Personally, though, I would rather have quality over quantity, which is what I got.

I would definitely ask for input in what she wants.

Edit: There is no way you will get a flawless 1.5 carat diamond unless the color is horrible. You could get very nice color and clarity. Check out this link. This is just the diamond. Depending on the metal and whether she wants diamonds in that, it will add up:

Ha! I could have the wedding I want AND have paid off my engagement ring off with that amount of money!

BTW- My ring cost just under $2k, and I never wanted a big wedding…. But I do want to get married in a cruise

For 10K you can find an extraordinary ring ! Probably an Ideal cut 1.20 to 1.30 G-H VS2-SI1 Checkout they have high quality diamonds and engagement rings, great prices and very good customer service that can help you a lot.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
