What do I do about the engagement ring?

Sunday, August 9th, 2009 | Weddings

Stefanie asked:

alright, I would like to have an engagement ring of some sort (diamond or band) to wear from the time of proposal to the wedding day. however after receiving my wedding band during the ceremony I would really rather just wear only the wedding band on my left hand. What are my options?

Wear an engagement ring, and then once you are married wear your wedding band. TECHNICALLY you are going from engaged to married…
No rule says you must wear both.

You can wear your engagement ring on your right hand or you can only wear your engagement ring on special occasions. Your engagement ring can be inexpensive so that you don’t have to feel bad about not wearing it often (or at all). You can totally get a CZ ring (or whatever floats your boat) and then just put it in a drawer after you get married.

alot of engagement rings and wedding rings are from a set that bond together if yours is one of these the two rings become one. like you and your husband become one. you can always have your engagement ring and give it to your daughter as a purity ring.

many of my Asian neighbors remove their engagement ring once they are married and wear it on their right hand for special occasions.

I know in some cultures the engagement ring is moved to the opposite hand after marriage.

you could do either of those things if you don’t want to wear it with your wedding ring.

The most popular choices are to put the engagement ring away or to move it to the ring finger of the right hand.

There really are no hard-and-fast rules, though: if you want to do something else, you can.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
