How big of an engagement ring for ring size 11.5?
Sunday, May 16th, 2010 | Weddings
My girlfriend’s ring size is 11.5 and I am planning to get her an engagement ring. How big of a diamond would look proportional on her finger? My budget is tight (max around $3.5K)
Thanks a lot!

As big as your budget will allow. Trust me, she won’t care about how it looks compared to the size of her finger once she sees that huge rock.
And M h, you can’t take your girlfriend to pick out an engagement ring genius!

Your girlfriend is fat.

Why not take her to pick out the ring instead of trying to figure out if the diamond is going to be too small. Besides rings that have diamonds that are too big no matter what size the hand its on is difficult to wear. They get snagged on shit and they become a nuisance…always go try on rings first to see what she wants…

You’ll need a big diamond. You might want to listen to the song “William it was really nothing” by Morrissey.

I would suggest an oval-shaped diamond in a solitaire setting. The oval shape makes the diamond look larger than a round stone of the same carat weight. In addition it would make her finger look more slender, and would be an unusual but not crazy style. Putting all the value into one stone is always a good idea.
To answer your question, 3/4 to one carat should be about right. You can compromise somewhat with small flaws not visible to the naked eye, and less than perfect color. My own ring is yellow gold, with the diamond in a white gold setting. A bit of a yellowish tinge would not be noticeable in a yellow gold ring like that.

I like the idea of letting her pick it. See if the jewelry store will let you get anything in her size and come back with her to exchange it. Be sure to explain the situation. If they will not let you, see if you can find some kind of substitute. That way you can have something in hand when you ask, but can pick something together for the long term that will be much more special.
Congratulations and good luck!!
And to every one making fun of her- I truly feel sorry for you. You are sad lonely people!!

i would say 1/2 carat to 1 carat would be perfect. more than 1 carat will look fake and guady, but less than 1/2 carat may look too small on her finger. so anywhere inbetween there would be perfect.
and 3,500 is waaay too much to spend. you can find gorgeous 1 carat rings for around $1,000 to $1,200. don’t spend more than that.. save the rest of your money for the actual wedding.

I would suggest you look more at the ring style versus the stone’s size. 3.5 K will not get you a huge stone, but you will get more for your money if you buy from a self-employed ring-maker, rather than a retail store, their price mark-up is huge !!
If you have the stone set on a thinner band, then it will appear larger. And go for a solitaire, meaning one stone in the ring, so you can get the largest stone for your budget.
And look at the shape of the stone, too. An emerald cut diamond is going to be much longer and narrower than, say, a round cut, which looks shorter and wider, know what I mean ?
Go to the ring-maker by yourself, and have him show you the different options, then surprise your woman, she’ll appreciate all the effort you made for her.

You think 3.5K is a tight budget for an engagement ring??
But as or your question, I picked out my own engagement ring and I am happy I did. I got exactly what I wanted. You could even turn ring shopping in to the proposal. Take her in to a jewelry store and propose to her right there, in front of the rings. I am sure most women would be happy to have a say in what ring they get.

11 1/2 - are you sure? that’s quite a large size - anyway what i wanted to say is instead of a diamond why not do something like a ring with both yours and her birthstones? much prettier, much more personal and unique and you could find a gorgeous one for your budget! no matter what stone you choose get a wide band - if her hand is that large then a wider band will look far nicer on her - good luck and i hope you find the perfect ring.

I’ll tell you that it’s not the size of the stone or stones that will be proportionate to the ring or her finger, but what she likes and what you can afford. For example, I have a 4ct center stone but my finger is only a size 8. By my hand can handle something that size and I think it’s proportionate to my hand. But My best friend used to have a size 10 finger but at first didn’t even want a diamond. She now has a diamond but it’s only 3/4 ct. She couldn’t stand to have something the size of my ring. It’s too big and would drive her crazy.
So I’m saying just because the finger is bigger, doesn’t mean the stone needs to be bigger.
With your budget, I would try to get either a 3/4 ct at a moderately good quality stone, or a 1ct or larger stone with lower quality. Remember, either way, in 5-10 years you can upgrade if you want her to have something better. But you already have a good amount in your budget for something that will show her you love her.
Good luck!

some of you people are very rude and im not gonna mention what other words come to mind..
i have an 11.5 finger and i am FAR from fat.
and my ring is one carat and it looks amazing,
more than big enough.
dont go overboard she’ll appreciate whatever size you give her.
my ring was 2400 but we got it on discontinued clearance for 900
(=
dont worry about these people, their idiots.

Not going to lie, my first impression was that 11.5 sounds large for a ring finger.
There are so many variables (with any woman), that it’s really a matter of what she likes and dislikes. I would suggest that you either take her shopping, or if you want it to be a surprise talk to a good friend of hers or her mother, and get them to go ring shopping with her (maybe on the pretense that THEY are buying themself jewellery, and hint that she starts to try some one. get them to report back to you).
You’ll definitely find something beautiful for 3.5K. Mine was 1.5K and I love it.
Start by looking here and then at local jewellers, and maybe even but I think many of their rings are above your budget, it still might give you an idea of styles to look at from other suppliers.
Good luck!

I would double check her ring size. Mine is a size 5 so a 11.5 sounds pretty big. Plus the bigger the ring size the more expensive it is. Anyways goodluck and if she loves you the amount you spend on the ring doesnt matter as long as it doesn’t look like you got it out of a cracker jack box.

Are you sure her ring size is 11.5? It seems awfully big. I am very overweight and my ring is an 8 to 8.5. I don’t even think my thumb is that big. As a matter of fact, my husband’s ring isn’t that large either. Something sounds wrong. Plus the ring goes on the left hand, and if she is right hand dominant the fingers on her left hand will be smaller. (you use your dominant hand more so they are slightly larger) Make sure of her ring size first. For 3,500 bucks you aren’t going to get somethinig very big. Maybe close to a carat if you search hard enough and go with a lesser quality. I’d choose quality over size.

Buy her a ring thats not a single Diamond. You can get whatever size in the middle with smaller diamonds around it.

3K is a good budget but since your girlfriend’s finger is large you won’t want a ring that is too small. Look for a ring that maybe doesn’t have the largest center stone but has a center stone surrounded by smaller stones. Also look for rings that have prong set or pave set stones, because channel set rings cannot be sized up to an 11.5. Here are some examples in your price range.
This is over 1/2 an inch from top to bottom:

Get the largest diamond you can afford. A large diamond on a thinner band makes the diamond look bigger but because of the large ring size she wears you may want to go for a heavy substantial band.
Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
