And, how big is your center stone?
18 Comments to Engagement ring diamonds: How small is too small? And how big is too big?
My mom always told me never to accept one under a carat. It should also come with papers if it is a real diamond.

People should buy according to their taste, the size of their fingers, and what they can afford. Mine is 1.24 carats center stone, round brilliant in a micropave vintage-style art deco setting with 3 channel set princess-shaped diamond accents in the shape of a geometric heart on either side of the center stone in white gold with milligraining on a split shank band. That was a mouthful!
It’s perfect on my average size 7 1/2 finger. My hubby said he thought it was perfect for me, and he didn’t want to look cheap. However, I would have loved it even if it was .25 carats.
Round brilliants are true to carat weight.
See:
A princess and other square shapes as well as a heart shape appear smaller than carat weight.
See:
An emerald shape and other long length shapes such as marquise, oval, rectangular radiant, and rectangular cushion appear larger than their carat weight.
See:
So when you ask what is too big or small in terms of carats, you also have to consider the shape. A 1 carat emerald shape would appear larger than both a 1 carat princess and a 1 carat round brilliant.
For example, an average size 1 carat princess shape is 5.5 x 5.5 millimeters.
An average size 1 carat round brilliant shape is 6.5 millimeters in diameter.
An average size 1 carat emerald shape is 7.0 x 5.0 mm.

Too big is when the diamond looks gaudy on *your* finger or looks like something out of a bubble gum machine.
There isn’t a “too small” of a diamond. The person getting the diamond should only get what they can afford *without* incurring debt.
However, there is a caveat, if the guy is rich and can afford a large diamond but gets his gal a ring from the can of a soda pop… C’mon.

Depends on what looks good on your hand. I’m tall with long fingers (6ft with size 9 ring finger) My 2ct solitaire diamond looks perfect on my hand. I’ve seen 2ct on small hands, like size 4 or 5, and it looks fake. So it depends on the size of your hand and the size of your man’s wallet. My future in laws always told my fiance what was acceptable price for a ring.

Anything under 1 carat is too small.
Too big is where personal preference comes into play. Some women prefer smaller stones while others like flashy rings. Personally, I like when they’re just big enough to make a statement.
I’m not engaged, so no center stone here.

mine is about 1 carat there is one big stone in the middle and then 8 smaller diamonds 4 on each side! it is gorgeous. i dont have the smallest or largest fingers so it fits my hand very well. but it depends on $$$$ and preference my fiance got mine b/c he liked it. he didnt like just a 1 stone ring so i got 9 diamonds.

The center stone on my engagement ring isn’t that big at all. I have 4 small, but not tiny diamonds on either side and it looks nice. You wouldn’t want the diamonds to be too big that you wouldn’t be able to hold your finger up; and you wouldn’t want them to be too small when you would have to use a magafier on it.

Too big is when it unbalances you or when it weighs you down and you drown in a puddle :p To me, too big is when you go into debt for it.
Too small is when it’s microscopic.
But too big or too small is a personal choice and it does depend on the style of the ring.

the size of your diamond should be dependent on how much your fiance can afford to pay for it without getting in debt (and a lot of people forget that!)… if it’s a quarter of a carat but that’s all your fiance can afford, then that’s perfectly fine… if your fiance is a successful business owner who could easily spend 5k a night on a caribbean beach resort but opts to buy you a half a carat of diamond, then that’s too small.
my center stone is 1.07 princess cut and i have 10 brilliant cut side stones.

My friends have all different sizes of rings and I think that usually less than .50 is too small and more than 2.0 is too big. Now this is only if it’s a solitaire. Some rings under a half carat are beautiful but when it’s a solitaire I think it looks strange if it’s too small.

1/5th ct is too small for any hand, unless you are talking smaller than a size 4 ring.
1/4 ct works for small and average sized hands. For large sized hands like a size 8 or bigger, its too small, 1/3rd is good.
What is too big? For a small to average sized hand anything bigger than 3/4 ct on the center stone and you are pushing it. For a large hand then 1.5ct
I have a solitaire, the center stone is .89ct, its emerald shaped, it looks appropriate on my man hands, lol (sz 9)
I am not knocking big diamonds, its just really noticeable. I have seen a 2ct on a size 6 finger, the diamond was about the width of her finger, it really looked ridiculous. I am not a flashy type person though, for those that like gaudy, bigger than what I recommend is fine, but I still say the 2ct on a size 6 is too big.

Under 1 ct is too small. And I would say anything over 5 ct is too big.

To me, anything less than 1/3 is too small. And anything bigger than 1 carat is too big. I have small hands, so huge stones look ridiculous on me.
September 22, 2010
I have very thin, long fingers, so I’d like 1/3-1/2 a carat.

No such thing as too big or too small - it all depends on the hand of the wearer.
A woman I know had quite a rock and it looked great on her hand. Other woman have more delicate hands and a large diamond would look ridiculous and pretentious on them. Get what suits you.
My centre stone is half a carat. There is a small shoulder stone on each side of maybe .02 each. The effect is almost like a solitaire but not quite. I love my ring and I’ve been wearing it for over 19 years.

“First of all, take a look at the size of your fingers, and your hands when deciding the right size of your stone. If you have very small hand, and tiny fingers anything above 1,5 carats may look a bit too big for my liking. But I’ll say it again that’s my opinion, if you really want the bigger stone take it, after all you’ll gonna wear it and not me. Average diamond size in diamond engagement ring is somewhere around 1 carat, but who says you have to be average? Choose what you like the most.”

Some of these answers remind me of why some girls will never find love. Maybe because they refused an engagement ring that was under one ct. Just ridiculous. If you need to ask this question or you answered it with an acutal too small size than maybe you aren’t ready for marriage.

If you wouldn’t marry him for no diamond at all, there isn’t a stone big enough to make your marriage last.
Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
