Is $3800 for a.75 carat EGL certified solitaire engagement ring too expensive?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010 | Weddings

KarLi asked:

Specifics: Brilliant round cut, canadian diamond, EGL certified, VS, H color, platinum band with a .75 carat diamond.

Backround story: he went to buy a me an engagement ring when I told him I didn’t need one. I’m already very happy with us getting married and buying a house. I just don’t see spending that much money when we ARE getting married anyway. He keeps telling me I deserve one. Don’t get me wrong it’s beautiful and I really appreciate it, but I just think it’s too expensive for a ring.

So, any diamond/engagement ring experts out there?

$3800 is a reasonable price for a diamond engagement ring.

I am, by no means, an engagement ring expert BUTTT I can tell you why he would be paying so much for that ring. Two words “platinum band”. Platinum is the most expensive type of ring that you can buy. That price would come down a lot if he could get the band in white gold, or yellow gold.

It sounds liks a lot of money, but for a platinum ring, it’s really not that bad.

Congrats!!

It sounds like a beautiful ring.

Since he’s dead set on getting it for you, wear it proudly.

No it is not. What matters is if you love it. Remember you will be wearing it every day for the rest of your life. $3800 over a lifetime is nothing plus think of it as an immediate family heirloom that can either be used for future family or reset as it is passed down.

It’s very expensive for that size. A ton of people already told you that in your last question. I’d look around, especially for I color. That’s a very high price.

For a 3/4 ct that is expensive. I’ve seen quality diamonds that weren’t anywhere near that much.

If you switch the platinum band for a white gold one instead, the price will come down considerably and the average person couldn’t tell the difference. If you really love platinum or have an allergy to gold or something of that nature, go for it by all means, but that’s what’s jacking the price up.

That’s right on the ballpark. Diamonds that size retails not less than 2K, and platinum bands are what made it more expensive, platinum bands can go for at least 2K depending on size of course and setting, lowest price I saw is around 500$

Try. It will give you prices on loose diamonds. You’re in the right price range for just the diamond alone. Your platinum band is a bonus! It’s practically free at this point! Plus, platinum doesn’t require for you to redip(?) them. White gold requires that seal to be done every couple of years to prevent it from turning yellow. That’s sweet that he keeps telling you that you deserve it. Tear jerker!

The platinum band could be driving the price up a bit.

you can research prices there. The prices of diamonds varies greatly based on the 4 C’s.

I think the price is reasonable, though., but need more specifics on the cut and clarity ( VS what??) I personally would try for F or G in color.

Engagement rings need not always contain diamonds. Popular trends include using gemstones as sidestones as well as other precious stones.
